Our new friend Matt offered us dinner: the snapper he caught just the night before!  He filleted it like the pro that he is.  We have never seen anything like it.  Expertly done on his homemade filleting bench with no bones at all and only a few cuts.  Of course, we couldn't turn him down and shared a nice meal with Dennis and Sue.  As ranger of the park, he gets to live on the park grounds (right on the beach) in a really cool house from the early 1900s.  It was quite impressive!

He also had a story to tell.  Matt regularly free dives for dinner (for him and his partner Anna) with nothing but his fins and a spear gun.   Just the other day, he had speared a large kingfish and thought, "great, kingfish steaks for me and my friends tonight!".  However, as he turned and headed for the surface, a golden shark (aka bronzie) spotted the fish.  Unfortunately, as the shark headed nearer, the fish wrapped itself around Matt's ankles and legs.  He got to the surface but wasn't able to fend off the shark and had to hit it over the head with the spear gun a couple of times.   He assured us that most sharks (except whites) aren't interested in humans, just fish. But the last time the shark came at him, he was pretty sure the shark was looking at his leg and not just the kingfish.  In the end, the shark got the fish and Matt was left unscathed.  All the better for all of us!

No sympathy for sharks, but you gotta feel a little sorry for that fish on the table. Glad your trip is so wonderful for both of you.
